National Clearing Information for 2018/2019
All applicants will be invited to preference all posts across the LETBs/deaneries nationwide. All applicants with a status of 'Interviewed Successful' were automatically entered into national clearing if they were unsuccessful in their preferred regions.
This included applicants who had scored above the minimum 'pass' mark necessary to be considered for a post. However, If there were enough other candidates with higher scores in their preferenced LETB, they would not have been offered a post.
In 2017/2018, after the hold and upgrades deadline, iterations of offers continued until all posts were filled or had reached the bottom of the pool of successful applicants. All eligible applicants were contacted via email to advise them they had been entered into the clearing process.
This can be a stressful time. However, it is important to remember that jobs allocated through clearing and still very much training jobs, and whilst perhaps not in the geographical region initially requested, they can and often do still lead to successful entry into higher specialist training at ST3 level. In national clearing, any remaining posts are re-preferenced by all eligible applicants. Applicants are able to re-rank their sub-preferences across the UK over 5 working days. Applicants are also able to re sub-preference all available posts, regardless of whether they were preferenced initially.
In the CST National Clearing program all eligible applicants will be re-ranked using their interview score to generate the new National Clearing rank. All eligible applicants will be notified with instructions for the next steps. After the preferencing window closes, offers will commence and will be released according to rank then preference.
Applicants will only receive ONE offer in National Clearing and you have a 48 hour period to accept or reject, (so ensure that you are somewhere within the UK and checking your emails, or if abroad, that you have a reliable internet connection!). If you do not accept a post by the deadline, it will then be offered to the next most highly ranked candidate.
There is no holding facility during the Clearing process.
National Clearing will run until all the posts are filled or there are no successful applicants remaining.
Many, if not most applicants for CST will have had an excellent academic record. Indeed, this entry into clearing may be the first perceived 'setback' in your career to date. Try to concentrate on the positive points here. There are excellent trainers and training opportunities around the UK and often practical experience will be far more complete outside the large, more recognised centres with the highest competition ratios. This can hold you in good stead when it comes to your competitiveness at entry into Higher Surgical Training at ST3 level.
