National Recruitment in 2018/2019
The Core Surgical Training National Office is administered via the health education east of England but led by London and the South East. This has no bearing on where you want to work but means you only have to submit one application.

For 2018/2019 applicants, applications for Core Surgical Training for England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland will be accessed through a single application process. In the application form you state a preference for the deaneries you wish to be considered for interview. Candidates were previously guaranteed two interviews at their two preferred Units of Application (UoA). However, since 2013/14, applicants have been invited to interview in front of a single panel.
If you are successful you will be contacted and requested to sub-preference the programmes available. Core surgery posts are allocated based on your overall ranking, a product of your application form and your interview score.

Competition Ratio
‘How competitive is the Core Surgical application process?’
This is a commonly asked question and a source of great worry for many applicants. Historically, the simple answer was that it depended on where you applied. In some areas, competition was comparatively low, for instance in the South West Peninsula Deanery, but in others, notable KSS, London and Oxford, the competition ratios have historically been approximately 6:1. Note that these ratios can change year on year. In 2013/4, 1370 applications were received for 615 posts giving an overall competition ratio of 2.2: 1
The most up to date information from 2018 was released for the UK as a whole. 1870 applications were received for 636 posts - a ratio of 2.94
This IS a competitive process, so you must be prepared to perform as well as you can on the day!

Sometimes these competition ratios can be daunting. Our view is to take them into consideration, but then ignore them and apply where you would most like to be. If you follow our advice and have worked hard then you should hopefully be competitive enough to gain the CT1 deanery of your choice. Remember, where ever you apply it is important to put maximum effort in to gain the most marks possible, as your interview score in particular determines your ranking in each deanery you apply for, which in turn determines which individual job you get, which will influence your application to ST3
